Reconnect the power cord and all other cables to the computer, then start up the computer.
Place the computer in its upright position. You don't need to press the compartment door release button when replacing the compartment door. Replace or install a DIMM by setting it down into the slot and pressing firmly until you feel the DIMM click into the slot. However, it took several minutes even for the window to appear (during which I had the spinning beach ball). But it wasn't really stuck, pressing cmd-L (I think it was L) you get a window with the installation log where I could see that it wasn't really stuck just for some reason moving the 40 000 files of several LaTeX installations. For me it was apparently stuck at '2 min remaining' for about three to four hours.

But you have (re)download the latest version of iPhoto from the Mac App store (and to be able to do so you have to first put the existing iPhoto application into the the Trash, then you can 'Install' it from the Purchases tab in the Mac App Store app). The iMac hung up during the Yosemite install, so I made a call to Apple Tech Support. It's now running fine, but there were some hiccups.
